The Dreaded Dental Visit

Dentist! The title, itself, sends chills down my spine. What is it about dentists? They are not your enemy, nor your nemesis. You could say that these well trained and caring doctors, are there for your well being. I don’t know about you, but I do cringe at the thought of having to visit (did I say visit?) one of these clinics.

About a year ago, I broke part of a tooth, and the first thing that came to my mind was, you got it. The Dentist. Well, I made up my mind that no one would be poking my mouth, nor torturing this macho man! No sir! I saved that part of the tooth, visited the local pharmacy, purchased some temporary dental paste, and proceeded to fix my tooth.
It worked! No dentist for me. I should open my own practice! Well, a few weeks later, as I drank some juice, that part of my tooth came loose. I repeated the previous process, and felt quite pleased with the results. Guess what! You got it again. Hmm! How can I avoid that dental visit. By the way,why do we call them visits? Well, time to heed my wife’s advice, and make that appointment.

Aware of how I feel about Dentists, she found one close to our neighborhood. Two days later, I was on my way to who knows what. We arrived at the clinic, and to my delight, the place was jammed packed. Perhaps they’ll cancel the appointment. No such luck. The woman at the front desk asked me to sign in. I looked at her long and hard, but she just smiled. I kept looking around for the nearest exit. Maybe I could make a break for it. I looked back at my wife, and gave her a sheepish smile. I signed my name, walked back to the waiting area, and sat next to her.

After what seemed like an hour to me, a young woman called my name, and told me to follow her to the next room. After an arduous, and torturous walk(well not really. It took me about five seconds, as I was seated next to “that” room, but to me it felt as if I had walked for hours), I entered the room. One thing I do remember. I thought I had heard someone cry out, “Dead man walking!” Hmm! The nerve. I was instructed to sit, and she introduced herself as Stephanie Paiz. I really thought she was going to say that her name was Igor. She was quite pleasant, and joked with me, as she attempted to ease my apprehension. She must have seen the horrified look on my face.

I was instructed to open my mouth, and some square little things were placed inside my mouth. Some creepy contraption was place on top of my head, and I said to myself, “Aha! The torture begins! Where’s my last meal? Again, she set my mind at ease. My teeth were being X-rayed. We completed this phase of the visit, and I was taken to the torture chamber. Well, the other, ROOM!

Stephanie sat me at the dental chair, brought out a few instruments, (I didn’t hear any music) and stated that the doctor would be in shortly. As I sat there, petrified, I kept looking for that ten inch needle these dentists love so much. The good doctor came in, and to my dismay, looked too young to be a dentist. He introduced himself as Dr. Zachary Currie. He asked that I open my mouth, and to be still. He proceeded with the poking, but there was no pain. No needle was used, thank God. After a few minutes, he asked if I had brought the part of the tooth that had broken off, which by the way, was a gold inlay. I showed it to him, and to my surprise, was told that he could attach it permanently.

He brought out the drill, and began to clean out the area. All along, he walked me through everything he was doing. Throughout this process, I felt no pain whatsoever.
After he finished, He told me that all went well. I thanked them, examined the work he had done, and voila, it looked perfect. This is the first time in my life, that I feel good about a dental visit. Dr, Zachary, and his assistant, Stephanie, demonstrated a totally professional, and caring attitude throughout this process. What a team!
For those residing in Albuquerque, NM, I highly recommend this clinic.

  1. I’m presently going through the dental woes and even though I like my dentist, it’s still expensive and I am still waiting (after 2 months) for my new partial. It’s not so much the dentist’s fault as it is my insurance company. You see, according to my plan what ever partial I get, it has to last 7 yrs before they will replace it. My dentist is trying to make me one that will last that long, but so far the ones he has made are too tight and won’t fit down into my mouth properly. Oh well, I guess I will be giving him a call again tomorrow to see if he’s made any progress. I’m glad to see not everyone has the same issues with the dentist as i have for the last two decades lol!

  2. Thank goodness you found a good, pain-free dentist Johnny! I hate going to the dentist too, it really does feel like ‘dead man walking’!! Hopefully you won’t have to worry quite so much next time…all blessings to you this day my friend 🙂

  3. What??!! Drilling without drugs and you felt no pain? My mouth is so sensitive, even for cleanings, I request laughing gas. My blood pressure is usually high so it’s usually a few extra minutes before they can administer it. So even though I am not feeling any pain this way, with the use of drugs, I don’t care. I get through it to live another day!

    • It’s a miracle I even consented to visit this Dentist. I don’t think laughing gas will help me. Maybe I’ll take angry gas for my next visit, if there’s such a thing. Hmm! Who knows. Blessings.

  4. I wish my dental problems were a quick fix like yours. I went through my 3rd ‘surgery procedure’ yesterday and have 3 more to go through. So far the cost is up above $15,000. I must admit, about 70% is my fault. I should have found the money somewhere to get to a dentist sooner. Where I could have scraped up the bucks, I still don’t know. The only reason I’m going through this now is that my father left me a small inheritance when he passed away last spring. I’m in pain and am temporarily miserable, but I’m also not wearing dentures. 🙂

    • Oh yeah. My dad wore dentures, and for the first three months, he was miserable. He was a minister, therefore his words came out slurred. No Thanks. Glad you don’t have to put up with anything like that. These guys are too expensive. Hopefully, your pain will subside. Blessings.

  5. Unfortunately my employer doesn’t offer dental coverage so I haven’t been in years. I do need to go but can’t afford to pay out of pocket. Glad you had a pain free experience. I don’t like pain and their topical and lidocane (I think that’s what’s in those needles) don’t work on me.

    • Who knows what’s in those needles! All know is, that once you go under, you had better not drink nor eat for 100 years. They might call you, Mr. Dribble. Ugh! Hope you don’t have to go through this experience. blessings.

  6. I have yet to find the person who can proclaim that they love going to the dentist. But it helps if you LIKE the dentist. I love mine…even though what he does to me is not pleasant at all. But his empathetic attitude and great demeanor go a long way with me. In the end, I know he is doing the absolute best that he can. Somehow, that makes it all less painful 🙂

    • You’re so right. I liked this dentist.. A very caring and understanding one. I had one whom I thought worked for a road construction crew. That how rough he was. I guess he saw my teeth as crosswalks in need of repairs. Glad that’s over. Blessings.

  7. You description of your (visit) was so perfect lol! I personally have never had a problem with the dentist but I understand why people do. My daughter has often felt the same way you have until after the visit when she realizes it was not that bad. I think it is all of the tools that make the drilling noises that people are scared of. Good post!

  8. OK you were lucky. I hate, hate the dentist. I know I should go but seeing the size of that needle and having to sit in the stiff position which feels like hours is not for me. I see their signs that you do not take care of your teeth they will fall out. I can’t even stand having my teeth cleaned. I think they take that dental floss and tried to dig down far enough to clean your toes. Not my favorite place to visit. I wish it were just a visit and leave within 3 seconds. Came, and I went…

    • I have never sat so rigid in my life. By the time I leave, that chair is a mess. Hey, maybe that’s why they have always charged me extra. Someone has to pay for those chairs. The flossing gets to me. I have notice that my toes seem to be that much cleaner. Hmm! Who knows! Three seconds is too long. I believe a phone call should do it. No visit. Blessings.

  9. I think you hit the nail on the head, for me, it’s the Needle & the drill!! When they do a filling and the dentist uses that damn drill, the smell too makes me want to crawl out of my SKIN!! Here is a great way to save costs on a Dentist visit. Most Area community action centers, who help low-income people have a Free Dentist Service. You Donate your time at the local Community Action center and they give you free dental service. Dentists in your community donate their service & time on a rotating basis for Teeth cleaning, Fillings, and extractions! It’s a win, win for everyone! We have no Dental Ins, so I have had services done this way the last couple years. They are the same Dentists that your paying Big Bucks to. Just something to look into. But hey, it was a good try to fix the tooth yourself!..LOL…Oh, Thanks for coming by my blog today! Happy Veteran’s Day! *Catherine* 🙂

  10. Hi Catherine, Thank you for remembering us Veterans. Appreciated. I’m going to follow your lead, and find out what services are free to the public. Hey, maybe they’ll go easier on your teeth. These Dentists need to develop a silent drill! That needle should be invisible! Hopefully in our time. LOL Blessings.

  11. I had to laugh when i read your title. When I first met my husband he had been avoiding visiting the dentist for years. The words “fear” or “scary” never came up but they were pretty evident in his behaviour. I learned from his sister that their family dentist had been a bit of a sadist (more likely just a reflection of the times, tools and practices of the day) and so none of them cared to go to the dentist. I eventually convinced my husband to go for a visit with my dentist, he was a pretty relaxed guy and I spent most of my visits laughing. It was a case of love at first (yes I’m going to say it) bite. I no longer go to that dentist, he’s simply too far away from where I live and work but my husband still goes, despite the distance. It’s amazing what a little bedside manner does for client/dentist relations.

    • Hi Debra. Merry Christmas. Thank you for your comment. Dentists have always scared me. I view visits as death sentences. I empathize with your husband. I’m glad I found one with good bedside manners. You were God sent. You hubby is forever indebted to you. Oops! This reply sounds like a poem as you read it. Very choppy. 🙂 Blessings.

  12. As I said before, I do realize the importance of good dental health but that doesn’t mean I LOVE going to the dentist. I have had my share of poor or awful experiences at the dental office. But now I feel pretty lucky. I found an awesome dentist who really takes her time with me and makes the experience less anxious. I am glad you have found the same. 🙂

  13. Oh yes, P, the dreaded needle of torture. When injected in the uppers it feels like it’s going to jab through the nose cavity. And WHY does the dentist use our face for a hand rest while operating? A gentle dentist can make a fortune!

    • That is so funny. Also, why do the try to engage you in conversation, while they work on your mouth. No one can understand what you are saying!
It’s like speaking a foreign language. Hey, maybe they have a secret one. Dentalish! Blessings.

  14. Ok my first visit here, I think I will be back, don’t run screaming now I don’t bite, unless you are a dentist then I might bite but only because I can only open my mouth a small way and if you have fat fingers I could end up biting you……ok I am joking I have never bitten a dentist although I have thought about it a few times………..lol I do only have a small mouth and can only open it a little bit so that part is true. I am not afraid of dentist I just don’t like them, they tell me to open wider and I am like that is as wide as it opens………..

    • Thank you for your amusing comments. Dentists are here to stay, so we had better make the best of it. Did I say best? What? There’s nothing best about a dental visit! That word does not exist among them! Ahhh! Well, all seriousness aside, I don’t care how nice they are, or how attentive, I’m not looking forward to my next visit. Blessings.

  15. When I visit the Dentist, I find that they ask me questions that I cannot articulate as my mouth is being worked on by them during that moment. I wonder if they really understand the answers. 🙂 I am grateful for my Dentist and I am glad your experience was positive!

    • Thank you Jen. I some times wonder whether of not they understand mumble jumble, better than English. “Please don’t make conversation while in the process of torturing me.” 🙂 Oh well. We need them. Thanks for your comments. Blessings.
