Is Your Dream Dead?

Do you ever day dream? What do you dream about? Are these realistic dreams, or just fantasies? Have you ever taken the necessary steps to make these dreams a reality, or did you pass on them for fear of failure, rejection, or ridicule by those around you? Did you ever confide on those who are close to you, like family members, friends, your teachers etc. regarding these dreams, and how did they react? Do you find yourself in a rut because you did not pursue your dreams, and how has this decision affected you?

There are so many heartbreaking stories of individuals, who find themselves in the aforementioned predicament, as they chose to go with the flow, instead of exploring those dreams further. They find themselves in dead end jobs, meaningless careers, lack of education, and as the years fly by, they have resigned themselves to what might be considered, lack luster lives.

As a child, I always dreamed of becoming an Automotive Engineer. I had a very sound support system in my dad, and mom. They never dissuaded me in any way what so ever, but rather, would encourage me to explore this possibility. I also dreamed about the music industry. I always felt that someday, I would become the next force to be reckoned with in this field. Coming from a musical family, many felt that this would be a given. Well, my Automotive Engineer dreams came to a screeching halt in High School. After exploring this industry in depth, I figured that music would be much more lucrative, and less demanding. Boy, was I wrong! Nevertheless, I chose music, and never looked back. No regrets.

Did I make the right decision? To some of you, perhaps not, but did I allow those dreams to fade away? Of course not! Some of you might be thinking right now, that it was easy for me to follow music, based on my family’s musical background. Yes, and no. It was not difficult, due in part to this inherited trait. Difficult, as I was forced to put all my energies in this most demanding profession. The hours of practice, the personal sacrifices, the dedication, the commitment, and the willingness to do everything within my power, and will, in order to achieve this dream. Although, I was able to achieve it, and did well in my chosen field, I did veer from this “Highway to Personal Glory,” and eventually sought higher education, and became a Behavior Therapist, but that’s another story.

Some of you who are reading this post, have dreamed of becoming writers, in Genres of your choosing. Many have experienced some rejections, and others have been shunned by those who would feel superior to you. You have made it to adulthood. No one dared to stop you from achieving this status. You are strong, focused, able to think, self made, and above all, able to decide your next move. Don’t be sidetracked, and diverted by some microscopic obstacle you can crush with your bare hands.

Are you willing to make what ever sacrifice it will take, to make your dreams come to pass? Before you answer that, set an imaginary target date before your eyes, and aim for that goal. You’ll never know whether or not you can achieve that haunting dream, if you don’t wake up, and pursue it. It might not be as simple as it sounds, but hey, you’ll never know if you don’t. Go for all the gusto. Blessings.

  1. My dreams never die, they just go back to sleep until they are ready to wake up.

I’ve had many dreams that have come to fruition to one extent or another. Maybe not as big as I dreamed, but enough to look back upon and feel like life has been good to me. Our dreams are always dependant on our willingness to pursue them. I’ve always been a bit lazy I suppose and my dreams have been slow in coming. But I still dream them and pursue them at my own pace.

This post is a good one to ponder.

  2. Johnny, what a great post. My son has ‘music’ dreams just like you did. He is a self-taught electric guitarist but going to music college killed his creativity. He knows he can’t give up the day job but he plods away with his song writing and playing. Who knows. We just never know where life can take us.
My dream has always been to be a published writer. I’m trying to complete my first book, a personal memoir, but I suffer from terrible fear of failure and so then end up sabotaging myself. Well, that was the old me I should say.
Now, since starting my blog in January, I am now ready to take the risk and put my writing ‘out there’. It’s all about following the dream and that dream has never, ever left me, indeed, it has been fanned into flames and is stronger than ever. My mantra now is ‘better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all’.
You followed your dream and you can always be so glad that you did otherwise you would have always been wondering ‘what it’? No experience is ever wasted, good or bad. Now you are encouraging others to follow their dream and go for the gusto. Thank you so much, I really needed to read this today….
    All blessings to you 🙂

    • Thank you Sherri. As long as your son does not veer from his dream, creativity will follow. You are also on the right track. It’s good to dream, but better yet, to wake up, and chase that dream. The best to you as you write. Blessings.

  4. Ahhh…life is made of dreams come true. Maybe they aren’t exactly what you dreamed, but a part of that dream and maybe it’s just the very part that mattered the most. Great advice to be the pursuer of your dreams, rather than wait for them to come true. There are many that sit and wait for life to give them meaning, when it’s more apt to create meaning in your life. Loved this post!

  5. At times we tend to get so caught up in “our stories” and blindsided by our egos.
YOUR words below, are powerful, in that they create a vivid and true perspective.

  6. A terrific reminder, Johnny, to follow our dreams. Too few of us ask ourselves what we think of our own lives. We live in the reflection of others’ evaluation of our choices. I’m trying like heck to move away from that. One way is to count the blessings, many of them the result of better choices you made learning from your past mistakes.

  7. I am living my dream. My dad felt I would be good in sales and persuaded me to sell real estate. I did that for 25 years, but my dream was to own my own business. I do now and I love it. There is nothing like living your dream. Great artcile

  8. I just turned 40 and as I sit here and think back to when I was still in school, I can’t say that I had this dream to be or do something in particular. I just wanted to graduate and find a job. I ended up in the music business (radio) and found that I loved it. I was good at it and stayed in that industry for ten years. But life happened and as I have gotten a little bit older, a little bit wiser – I can honestly say that my dreams now have a whole different meaning. I just started blogging a few months ago and have unending support from my husband. And I don’t know where this blogging thing will take me. But what I do know is that if you DO have a dream to do something or to be somebody, that it can be done. Perseverance, hard work and dedication can take anyone to where they want to go. Thank you for reminding us all of that!

    • Thank you for taking time out to comment. I also worked on radio, as a DJ. Liked this gig, but became quite bored with it. You are following your dreams, as evidenced by you perseverance. My dreams have been fulfilled, with the exception of becoming a published author. In time, this one will come to fruition. Blogging can be used as a stepping stone, which will catapult you into something far greater than you might expect. Keep writing. You are on the right trail. Blessings.,

  9. I have dreams that come and go. What I mean is, if it is MY dream, I usually draw it to me. If it is a shared dream, it may or may not come into being. In any case, most days, life IS a dream. Thanks for the encouragement to dare to dream.

    • Hey, Ernio. Thank you! What a pleasant surprise! I do miss the great times we enjoyed in the music ministry. They will always be cherished. I still miss playing the drums, but hey, that was then, and life goes on. We have our memories, and what great ones they are. Love you, and miss you. You did fulfill your dreams when you became our conductor, and a good one at that. Keep on keeping! Blessing

  12. I never thought that at this age I would be working so hard to become a writer. A few years ago I tried to write a novel but realized it was only the outline of a story that I want to eventually write. For now I am blogging and enjoying it. One thing about blogging though is that it is a lot more rewarding when people begin to comment and even comment on comments. I hope that people will like my writing enough to do that. I hope they will be inspired, challenged and caused to think. I wish that when I was in school I knew then what I know now, but doesn’t everyone? Oh the mistakes we make when we are young, not foreseeing future potential. Hopefully I will acquire a following and eventually write for a living. There’s still time. Thanks for your encouraging post..

    • Thank you Jeff. If this is your dream, and not wishful thinking on your part, then by all means, follow this dream. You have much to offer, and my feelings are, that you do have greater capabilities than what you think. Some times, what we knew then, might not be right for this moment and time. You are the present, so,make it work for you. Blessings.

  13. I’ve been thinking about dreams a lot lately. What makes some so persistent and what makes others disappear all together. I do think its about us and what we make happen. I’m frustrated at the idea of sitting idol and hoping that something happens, but too often that is precisely what I do with the big ones. Thanks for reminding me that, that is recipe for day dreaming, not living my dream.

    • Thank you Debra. We should all follow our dreams, as you have. When I read your posts, and read what you have accomplished, and how you have opened so may eyes, I do feel inspired. You still have much more in your plate. My friend, I don’t think that you even realize, how much of an impact you have had on us. There are still some blurry dreams you need to bring to the surface. Of this I am certain, that those dreams are going to expand your outreach, beyond your wildest expectations. Blessings.

  16. A very thought provoking post! Everyone has dreams of being… But as you point out, sometimes you don’t know how things will work out unless you just make the decision to just go for it! It is so easy to watch others success or failures from afar, but to get in there and go after what you want is something entirely different. I know that I am still trying to decide what I want to do when I grow up…and I am in my 40’s….eh, what’s the rush….

    Thank you for sharing!!

    • Thank you you for your insightful comments. According to some Psychologists, men tend to peak at age 55. You have a while to go yet 🙂 I pursued some of my dreams when I was younger, but decided to pursue the other ones, when I was older, wiser, and, and established. No turning back, nor wondering, what if. Well, you know the drill. Some times we fail, because we don’t pursue, but rather, sit around, hoping “it” will happen. You’re on the right track. Walk, don’t run, so that you won’t miss that opportunity that’s staring at your face. Blessings.

Yesterday I worked up a daily routine that I think will give me the structure I need to pursue my dreams.
I also need to shut up any negativity in my head, some of which does come from past experiences.
Thank you for your encouraging post.
